What happens if a person has a positive sickle cell test?
If a person has a positive sickle cell test, their red blood cells will often change shape when under stress. In that situation, a person's red blood cells will look like a tool known as a sickle (crescent-shaped) which is why it is called sickle cell disease.

A sickle cell test is done with the hope that screening will help identify athletes who might be at risk while exercising rigorously during competition. Although this might identify athletes who would benefit from added rest or more water during sports, a sickle cell test as a screening requirement is controversial because some people view such testing as discriminatory.
